WASHINGTON (AFP) – Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking called Monday for a new era of space conquest akin to Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the new world, in a speech on the 50th anniversary of NASA space agency.

“In a way, the situation is like Europe before 1492. People might well have argued that it was a waste of money to send Columbus on a wild goose chase,” the British scientist said at Georgetown Washington University.

Caffeine protects mice from UV-induced skin cancer

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Caffeine acts as a sort of “sun screen” when given to mice before their skin is exposed to and damaged by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, and this ultimately prevents the development of skin cancer, according to researchers.

China surpasses US as top carbon polluter: study

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – China has already surpassed the United States as the world’s largest carbon polluter, the authors of a California study said Tuesday.
“Our best forecast has China’s CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions correctly surpassing the United States in 2006 rather than 2020 as previously anticipated,” said the study by researchers at the University of California.

Gov’t raises safety questions about chemical in plastics

WASHINGTON – A chemical used to make baby bottles and other shatterproof plastic containers could be linked to a range of hormonal problems, a preliminary government report has found.
The report was greeted by some environmental groups as confirmation of their concerns, while chemical makers latched on to the report’s preliminary nature and its authors’ warning against drawing overly worrisome conclusions.

German schoolboy, 13, corrects NASA’s asteroid figures: paper

BERLIN (AFP) – A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA’s estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, a German newspaper reported Tuesday, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.

Forecast: Big quake likely in California

LOS ANGELES – California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037, scientists said Monday in the first statewide temblor forecast.

New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent.
